Biden Lashes Out In National Address
President Joe Biden delivered a national address on Thursday, expressing frustration at a special counsel report that highlighted numerous memory lapses, culminating in an embarrassing mistake during his speech.
In the report by special counsel Robert Hur, evidence of the president’s declining memory was cited, raising doubts about his ability to be willfully guilty of document security-related crimes. Biden focused specifically on the report’s mention of his forgetting the date of his son Beau Biden’s death and, subsequently, struggling to recall the name of the saint he prayed to.
Addressing the issue, Biden stated, “I know there’s some attention paid to some language in the report about my recollection of events. There’s even reference that I don’t remember when my son died.” Expressing his indignation, he rhetorically asked, “How in the hell dare he raise that?”
Biden admitted that he had forgotten the saint’s name during the speech, stating, “Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself, ‘What is any of their damn business?'” Despite the lapse, he continued, emphasizing that he doesn’t need reminders about his son’s passing.
In a defensive move, Biden shifted blame to his staff for the documents found in his possession, rejecting the characterization by the special counsel as a “sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.” Responding to the label, he asserted, “I’m well-meaning and I’m an elderly man, and I know what the hell I’m doing. I put this country back on its feet. I don’t need his recommendation.”
However, during the same address, Biden further added to concerns about his memory by mistakenly confusing the leaders of Mexico and Egypt when discussing the U.S.-Mexico border crisis. Critics seized on this misstep to intensify their critiques of the president’s memory lapses, prompting Biden to assert, “My memory has not gotten worse. My memory is fine!”
