Declare Trump Presumptive Nominee
A resolution currently under consideration by the Republican National Committee (RNC) could designate former President Trump as the party’s presumed nominee for the 2024 presidential election if approved. Proposed by RNC committee member David Bossie from Maryland, the resolution seeks to officially declare Trump as the presumptive nominee and shift the RNC into “full general election mode,” welcoming supporters of all candidates as integral members of “Team Trump 2024.”
Despite having secured only 32 delegates out of the required 1,215 at this early stage of the presidential nominating process, Trump and his allies are emphasizing his recent wins in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. The draft resolution argues that, considering these victories and Trump’s leading position in polls for upcoming states, there is no plausible mathematical path for any other candidate to secure the 2024 Republican nomination.
RNC spokesperson Keith Schipper clarified that resolutions are brought forward by RNC members, not Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. The Resolutions Committee will decide whether to present the resolution for voting by the 168 RNC members at the annual meeting scheduled for the following week in Las Vegas.
Bossie, a close ally of Trump, submitted the draft resolution. The document references Trump’s recent wins as evidence that he is the presumptive nominee, emphasizing the need for unity around Trump as the eventual nominee to defeat Joe Biden.
After Trump’s New Hampshire victory, McDaniel expressed skepticism about a path forward for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is in a one-on-one competition with Trump after other leading candidates withdrew. In response, Haley’s campaign asserted that the race is not over and highlighted the democratic nature of the nomination process, emphasizing that Republican voters across the country determine the party’s nominee.
