Members Will Not Vote For President Biden
On the same day that the United Auto Workers union formally endorsed President Joe Biden for re-election, the union president openly acknowledged that a significant majority of its members would not be casting their votes in favor of Biden during the 2024 presidential election.
While delivering the endorsement for Biden, UAW President Shawn Fain presented the autoworkers with a choice between supporting “someone who stands up with us and supports our cause” in President Biden or backing “someone who will divide us and fight us every step of the way” in President Trump.
“If our endorsements have to be earned, Joe Biden has earned it,” he conveyed, as reported by the BBC.
However, the union leader also conveyed to Fox News on the same day that a “majority” of members would not be voting for Biden.
In an interview with host Neil Cavuto on Fox Business, Fain reiterated his belief that Biden better represents his union. He highlighted President Biden’s presence on the picket line during the GM strike in 2019, contrasting it with President Trump’s perceived absence and silence on the matter.
Responding to Cavuto’s observation about past union support for Republican Presidents Reagan and Bush, Fain seemed to acknowledge that he didn’t anticipate a majority of his union members supporting Biden for re-election.
“It’s democracy in action. Look, let me be clear about this, a great majority of our members will not vote for President Biden; yes, some will. But that’s the reality of this,” Fain stated.
He emphasized that the majority of their members would vote based on economic considerations, asserting that the choice between the two presidents is clear in terms of standing up for the working class and labor versus supporting the billionaire class.
Fain also addressed the issue of electric vehicles, refuting the claim that manufacturers are pushing them despite lower-than-projected sales. He asserted the UAW’s commitment to environmental concerns.
This statement comes despite Ford reducing production of its electric F-150 Lightning trucks in 2023.
In 2023, Fain played a key role in securing favorable terms for the UAW, including a 25% general wage increase, a 150% increase for temporary workers, a 68% increase in the starting wage, and a 33% increase in the top wage under the new contract.
