Russia’s Nuclear Capabilities In Space
“I expressed my concern over what seemed to be the administration’s inadvertent approach towards an impending international crisis,” stated the Ohio Republican.
Mike Turner entered an elevator after exiting a secure facility in the basement of the Capitol in Washington on Feb. 15, 2024. House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner justified his decision to release a public statement regarding a national security threat, later revealed to be related to Russia’s nuclear capabilities in space.
“We must ensure that we prevent a potential international crisis. I was troubled by the perception that the administration was moving towards such a crisis without awareness. However, it appears they are now poised to take appropriate action,” the Ohio Republican remarked during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” airing Sunday.
Turner faced substantial criticism, especially from privacy advocates and members of his party’s right flank, for his choice to issue a vague statement about a “serious” threat and request the White House to declassify all related information.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, urged Speaker Mike Johnson to initiate a formal inquiry into Turner’s statement. He accused Turner of attempting to garner support for two legislative priorities: increasing aid to Ukraine and renewing a controversial surveillance power.
External organizations called on Turner to resign from his position as the head of the key committee, asserting in a letter that his actions “compromised your credibility, your committee, and national security.”
Turner dismissed these accusations, stating, “Ukraine funding is undoubtedly important, and FISA is crucial. However, this is about Russia and the administration taking decisive action,” he informed NBC’s Kristen Welker.
